Thomas Telford: The Colossus of Roads

Friends of Ludlow Museum

Monday 21 January at 7:00 for 7:30pm

Ludlow Museum Resource Centre

Speakers: David de Haan

Telford was the County Surveyor for Shropshire from 1787 till his death in 1834. This illustrated talk will look at the career of the eminent civil engineer, the first man to provide detailed specifications and costings for the many contracts he managed. Many of his works are still in use, notably the Holyhead Road and the associated bridges.

Speaker: David de Haan began his museum career in 1970 at the Science Museum, London, and in 1978 he joined the Ironbridge Gorge Museum, rising to the post of Director of Learning in 2007. At the same place and in parallel with his museum responsibilities, from 1998 he was first a Lecturer and from 2000 until his retirement in 2012 he was Programme Director of the Ironbridge Institute. He still advises English Heritage on historical aspects of the Iron Bridge. He is the Secretary of the Association for Industrial Archaeology.

Tickets £4 (members £1) at the door)
